Richard was a grand finalist in the UK Musical Comedy Awards in 2020, which finds the best musical comedians each year from hundreds of participants. Richard had a big impact during the heats of the competition and was put straight to the final. Richard was unable to perform due to COVID implications, but he was tipped by judges as a favourite to win.

Richard’s comedy is an onslaught of foolishness including flutes, jokes, flutes, flutes, jokes, other obscure woodwind instruments, clowning, flutes, and jokes. And then sometimes for good measure he throws in more jokes. It’s very silly indeed and the audience often become willing contributors to the silliness.

Richard’s style is charming and inoffensive, not for any moral reason, but because he is worried that one day his Mum will sneak into the audience without him knowing. And if his Mum heard him say a naughty word she’d almost definitely demand he paid her back for all the hundreds of hours of childhood flute lessons.

Richard grew up in small seaside town in New Zealand and gained early notoriety by becoming the coolest boy in his school ever to get into the flute band. Later he found out that it was actually because the school only had a single flute, so in dismay he left to find his fame elsewhere.

His first move was to Sydney, where he accidentally took place in a comedy show by finding himself on stage after taking a wrong turn when trying to find the toilets. Armed with just a $10 recorder and zero jokes, his first performance wasn’t conventionally funny but he sure did get laughed at. Some might ask why he was taking a recorder to the toilet but that’s another story.

Richard then travelled throughout the UK and Europe, performing in comedy clubs, comedy festivals, and in front of his mirror. Although he became an audience favourite at the clubs and festivals, the mirror was not a fan.

So if you have never experienced flute comedy before (and chances are that unless you’ve seen Richard already that you have not) then it is time you came to see the joyousness of Richard’s comedy in action. And Richard will give you extra bonus cool person points if you bring your flute along with you.
